takayna / Tarkine

An ancient wilderness under threat

The takayna / Tarkine wilderness in northwest Tasmania contains the largest area of cool temperate, Gondwana rainforest within Australia — a living relic of when Australia was part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. It is home to the Tasmanian devil, spotted-tailed quoll, and hundreds of species of plants, fungi and invertebrates found nowhere else on earth.

Despite its extraordinary ecological and cultural significance, the takayna / Tarkine remains under constant threat from mining exploration, logging proposals, and the relentless pressure of off-road vehicles that damage fragile soils and vegetation.

The campaign

The Paddy Pallin Foundation has been a long-time supporter of campaigns to protect this irreplaceable wilderness. We fund advocacy, legal interventions and community engagement to secure permanent protection for the takayna / Tarkine.

takayna — the Traditional name

takayna is the name used by the Tarkiner people — the Traditional Custodians of this country. We acknowledge their deep connection to this land and support the inclusion of First Nations perspectives in all conservation decisions relating to takayna.
