Invasive plants — environmental weeds — are one of the most serious but least visible threats to Australian biodiversity. More than 2,700 alien plant species now grow in Australian ecosystems, competing with native plants for space, light and nutrients, and fundamentally changing the structure and function of habitats.
When weeds take over, the animals that depend on native plants — from insects to birds to mammals — lose the food and shelter they need. The result is a cascade of ecological decline that can be difficult and expensive to reverse.
The Foundation supports targeted weed management programs, community education and advocacy for stronger biosecurity measures. We focus particularly on early intervention before new weeds become established, and on protecting areas of high conservation value.
One of our flagship initiatives tackles the problem of weed seeds being inadvertently spread by outdoor enthusiasts through contaminated bags and gear. Simple cleaning practices can make a big difference.
Together we can protect Australia's most threatened ecosystems and species.
